In one sense life is fair because it treats just about everyone unfairly at one time or another. In another sense obviously life has been a lot more giving to say, Jennifer Lopez than it has to say, a homeless woman in NY.
Of course as a nice Christian girl I am required to tell you that the meek shall inherite the earth, and Jesus came to the poor and low first of all. So even if life isn't all that fair, I guess God is trying to be.
In another completely new direction I'd like to agree with K8. Life is what it is. And what is life exactly?

Neil, perhaps you are just a defective human being. ;) Though I admit I definitely empathized more with Flan than with Holden, perhaps because I had a huge, messy crush when I first read it.
